Yesterday, I went to the site for Sacred Stone Baronial Birthday for a
final walk through before the event. I hope that you will join us to
celebrate the Barony's 30 years. The site is Camp York in King's Mountain
State Park, a site which has been used for Sacred Stone events throughout
our history.
As has been true for the past several years, the state park now locks the
gate leading to the camp in the evening. This now happens earlier than I
remember in the past, by 8:30 PM according to the site manager. The codes
for the gates this weekend are 9507 for the main gate and 3902 for the Camp
York gate if it is found locked. I will have someone at the outer gate
from about 8 to midnight on Friday night to ensure that folks can get in;
please bring the codes if you anticipate arriving later than this on Friday
or in the early morning on Saturday.
Camp York does not typically allow tent camping, although they have
generally been OK with folks staying in their pavilions set up on the
field. The site manager has agreed to relax this restriction I will be
able to allow tent camping this year. This is a change from the
information that we had been answering with earlier this week.
The site features cabins which have been constructed by the Civilian
Conservation Corps in the 30s and 40s. Accommodations are on twin size
beds with camp style mattresses. Some of the cabins are missing bed frames
and/or mattresses, but we have plenty to handle those folks who have
pre-reserved and a fair number of additional campers. Still, if you are
concerned for your comfort you may wish to bring an air mattress or cot or
other sleeping arrangement that is comfortable to you. There are enough
beds to go around; there are simply not as many as the site claims to
sleep.
As has been true for many years, the park does not allow campers to drive
up to their cabins. Erosion has taken a severe toll on the roads that were
used when I first began attending events here lo those many years ago. I
recommend bringing carts if you have them. I will have mine available to
borrow, but one cart doesn't go far amongst the expected guests.
The site opens at 5 pm on Friday, and we have to be off site by 12 noon on
Monday. We do have events planned for the long weekend and the site is
still open until Monday morning, but the park has rented the site to
another group once we leave and will be enforcing the noon check-out time.
Cell phone reception on site is spotty at best. There were three phones on
site while I was there yesterday. Two of them had occasional reception -
generally not at the same time, and not in the same place. While I would
love to answer questions as folks come in, the odds of my being able to
answer the phone after leaving for the site about noon tomorrow aren't
good. You're welcome to try - I have two cell numbers listed below, and
will answer as reception permits.
I look forward to seeing you there!
