Noble Friends, Bards and Minstrels,

New at the UVA Music Library: THE CALLIGRAPHY OF MEDIEVAL MUSIC, edited
by John Haines (ISBN 9782503540054, our call # ML174 .C255 2011). I know
very little about music (some people want to throw rocks at me when I
try to sing), but this looks like a very valuable book for Scadians who
are interested in period music. A few of the scholarly articles include
"Calligraphy and the Study of Neumatic Notations", "Music Writing Styles
in Medieval Italy", "The Earliest Developments in Square Notation:
Twelfth-century Aquitaine", "The Consequences of Ars Nova Notation", and
many more. All but one of the 16 articles are in English (the odd one is
French). There many illustrations, including facsimiles of actual
manuscript pages in vivid color. Of course, there are numerous
bibliographical references, but no index (which is typical of
European-produced books of this type).

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, The Musically Challenged
