So, are you going to Dun Carraig? Have you ever wanted to learn how to
herald a court but been afraid to jump in without a guide? Now's your
chance to learn how to herald court! I'm going to be heralding and I
need a second - and that person could be YOU!

What does a second do? When I'm heralding, my second wrangles the
scrolls and/or medallions, keeping them in order and passing them to
me as each person called comes up. They also help to keep things
straight - and if the "primary" gets a sudden case of cough/choke/gag
the second can step in and call the vivat (I know, poor grammar -
Latin's not my strong point) or read the scroll or whatever is needed
to keep things flowing smoothly. More experienced seconds might want
to call a person or two into court - and I'm always thrilled with that
but never require it.

I also will sit down with you and explain exactly how we do things,
how the court report works, what you're responsible for as the
"primary" herald, so that when you herald court yourself, you're ready
for the experience. I go into projection, some cheater tricks on
pronunciation that Pedro probably doesn't even remember teaching me,
protocol, how to figure out the order of things and whatever else.

Sound overwhelming? It isn't, honest. Heralding court is awesome - you
get to see and hear everything that happens in court (and when you're
hard of hearing like I am, that's important.) You get to see the looks
on people's faces when they find out why they've been called into
court - and that's priceless. I can still remember a certain person's
eyebrow going up when I called his name to summon him into court -
it's a wonderful feeling. And honestly - while you're on show to a
point, you're right behind the thrones, and the only time anyone looks
at you is when you're calling things out. Otherwise their attention is
focused on Their Majesties or Their Excellencies, or that retainer
who's up there talking to that other retainer.

So if you would like to help me out by serving as my second, please
email me off list to let me know.
