Regarding same sex co-regents....it is period. King Henry II crowned his oldest son while he (Henry II) was still alive. King Henry III was sometimes known as King Henry the Younger. However, we all know how that co-regency ended. 

I may be mistaken ( if someone knows, they can chime in..), but I think the French may have also crowned a co-regent in very early times....?
