Noble friends,
There are two notable items on Wikipedia today that might be of interest
to Scadians.
The featured article for today is a biographical sketch of William de
St-Calais, Norman Bishop of Durham under William the Conqueror. St.
Calais was one of the most influential churchmen in England during his
tenure. The article includes some very interesting illustrations,
including Durham Cathedral, Durham Castle's keep, and a lovely
illumination showing the bishop. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_de_St-Calais .
Also of interest, today is the anniversary of the day Edward I of
England chose John Balloil to be King of the Scots in 1292. The death of
the infant Maid of Norway left Scotland without a ruler, and the regents
unwisely asked Edward to choose a new king from among the many
claimants. Balloil was selected by Edward as one of the most pliable of
the candidates, and treated him as a vassal. Eventually Balloil was
stripped of his regalia by Edward and imprisoned in the Tower of London,
later to be exiled family lands in France. When Sir William Wallace
raised the standard of rebellion against Edward, he fought in the name
of John Balloil, whom he considered to still be the rightful King of the
Scots. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Balliol .
Kind regard,
Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
