[MR] BBC: William Wallace as King of Scotland

Noble friends,

Here's an interesting piece from the BBC about a formerly overlooked
entry into King Edward I's "Pipe Roll", which charges Sir William
Wallace with attempting to usurp the throne of Scotland:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-13412135 . Maybe.
Maybe not. History has a way of getting twisted one way or the other for
political gain. All the books I've ever read say that as Protector of
Scotland, Sir William always acted in the name of exiled King John
Balloil. That doesn't mean Scottish history wasn't cleaned up a bit to
make Sir William the perfect martyr, any more than the "Pipe Roll" entry
proves he was a traitor to Scotland. The entry does throw interesting
light on how much King Edward hated Sir William, and could have been
propaganda aimed at his memory in Scotland. Ah, such is history!

Kind regards,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
