For immediate release:
On Sunday evening, June 12, 2011, the Triangle Gay Men's Chorus and the
Common Woman Chorus of Durham will present the Triangle’s first
performance of A Proclamation of Hope—featuring Sing for the Cure at the
Meymandi Concert Hall of Raleigh’s Progress Energy Center for the
Performing Arts.
Sing for the Cure, a world-renowned song cycle, honors the lives of
breast cancer survivors, the memories of those who died from the
disease, and the loved ones affected by it. Common Woman Chorus artistic
director Cindy Bizzell and Triangle Gay Men's Chorus artistic director
John-Philip Mullinax will conduct and WRAL-TV news anchors Debra Morgan
and David Crabtree will serve as narrators. Net proceeds from the
concert will be shared equally by the Susan G. Komen For the Cure
NC—Triangle, the Common Woman Chorus, and the Triangle Gay Men's Chorus.
Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker, Durham Mayor William V. Bell, Chapel Hill
Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt, WRAL-TV news anchor Debra Morgan, and WTVD-TV
news anchor Frances Scott are serving as the honorary co-chair committee
for the performance.
Tickets for the concert are available at TicketMaster.com and the
Progress Energy Center box Office.
Originally commissioned by Nancy G. Brinker, founder and CEO of Komen
for the Cure, Sing for the Cure is a musical journey that takes
listeners through the myriad emotions that accompany breast cancer. The
world premiere of this song cycle was in June 2000 and featured renowned
poet laureate Maya Angelou as narrator. Eleven years later, Sing for the
Cure’s universal message of hope continues to transcend cultural,
language, and political barriers.
______
The Common Woman Chorus (CWC) began in 1983 as a feminist chorus and
evolved into a woman-positive choral community that celebrates all life
styles and gender identities. The group’s repertoire emphasizes the
personal and political struggles of women while affirming the integrity
and inherent worth of each of us.
The Triangle Gay Men's Chorus (TGMC) presented their debut concert in
June 1995. TGMC recognizes the power of music to communicate important
truths about common human conditions and the value of all people. The
group strives to strengthen the spirit and open presence of the gay
community through positive images while staying true to its vision:
"Brothers Singing, Declaring Pride, Touching Lives."
