Atlantia
Please cross post as you see fit.
All,
There have been some, somewhat recent rules changes to Combat Archery within Atlantia. These changes have not been updated on the web yet. As I have had several questions posed to me, I thought it would be prudent to post this info to this list. I apologize for not posting this sooner.
Let me start by saying that one of the confusing factors (for more than just CA) is that every kingdom and then big war has a variant. I feel that it is important for every marshal to know the difference. I will be the first to say that it is difficult, but that importance level stays the same.
Before I get started let me talk a little about an unwritten rule that would cross all weapons forms in my opinion. If it seems like your pushing things, or what your doing might not be legal or un-sportsman like then don't do it. This is my opinion, but we are supposed to be friendly with each other out there, so act that way please.
Engagement:
We all know this is a tough issue and easily confused. Here is the rule from the Atlantian web site. This rule is active and has not been changed.
3.6.2.9 Engagement with missile weapons: An archer need not have eye contact with an opponent in order to shoot at them, but should be able to see their face or the front of their body when targeting them. Inadvertent strikes in the back (such as when the target turns away after the missile is loosed, or when the missile strikes an unintended enemy or friendly target) still count if they are recognized, but it should be expected that, in some cases, the target may not realize they have been struck.
Before moving to local Atlantian rules, I want to post some info in regards to heavy bows from the Society website. Page 15 talking about CA bow and crossbows. (http://www.sca.org/officers/marshal/docs/marshal_handbook.pdf)
6. If both Light and Heavy bows/crossbows, by the standards given below, are on the field at the same time, then all Heavy bows/crossbows must have their upper limb (or one limb for crossbows) covered with at least 4 inches (10 cm) of red material (tape, cloth, etc)
c. Light handbows measure 30 pounds (13.6 kg) or less at 28 inches (71 cm).
d. Heavy handbows measure 50 pounds (22.7 kg) or less at 28 inches (71 cm).
c. Light crossbows measure 600”# (691 kg-cm) or less.
d. Heavy crossbows measure 1000”# (1152 kg-cm) or less.
7. Heavy Ammunition (for use in Heavy bows, Heavy Crossbows, Light bows, or Light Crossbows)
a. Heavy ammunition must be of one of three styles: Tubular, Tennis Ball, or Fellwalker.
So we ALWAYS have light bows, so ANY heavy bow needs to be marked appropriately. Please understand this rule as it is very important. Please don't make me add a redundant rule for Atlantia. More rules leads to confusion.
The below are approved and in place rules changes.
Black is the old rule, red is the new rule.
3.5.3 Combat Archery Weapons and Armor Standards
Old -3.5.3.1.1 When utilized in conjunction with armored combat, armor standards for combat archers are the same as those for armored combat participants except that Archer’s Gauntlets may be worn on one or both hands in place of the full Gauntlets. Archers’ helms must be clearly marked with white diamonds (minimum length of 3 inches per side) on all four sides. The requirements for Archer’s Gauntlets are provided in the SCA Missile Combat Rules [available on line at: http://www.sca.org/officers/marshal/combat/archery/index.html]
3.5.3.1.1 Armor standards for combat archers are the same as those for armored combat participants except that Demi Gauntlets may be worn on one or both hands in place of the full Gauntlets.3.5.3.1.2 When utilized in conjunction with rapier combat, rapier armor standards shall apply. This removes the white diamond rules.
3.5.3.2 Weapons Regulations.
All combat archery weapons (including projectiles) must meet the requirements of the SCA Missile Combat Rules (http://sca.org/officers/marshal/docs/marshal_handbook.pdf). The following additional requirements apply in Atlantia:
OLD -3.5.3.2.1 Bows may have a maximum draw weight of 30 pounds at 28 inches. Crossbows may have a maximum throw weight of 600 inch pounds (pull x draw). Once this is removed, heavy bows will be allowed.
New -3.5.3.2.1 – this rule is to be remobved.
Old - 3.5.3.2.2 Arrows/bolts may have a base construction of either a wooden shaft, a fiberglass shaft, or a golf tube. Arrows/bolts made from Siloflex tubing (as described in the website: http://users.ev1.net/~theweb/siloarrows.htm) are allowed on an experimental basis. All wooden and fiberglass shafts must be longitudinally covered with a filament strapping tape and, when used in Armored Combat, are required to have an 'approved' AntiPenetration Device (APD) IAW the Society Marshal’s ruling (see the first website above for details). Arrows/bolts are not required to have APDs when used in Rapier Combat.
New - 3.5.3.2.2 Arrows/bolts may have a base construction of a fiberglass shaft or Siloflex tubing as described in the SCA Marshals Handbook. All fiberglass shafts must be longitudinally covered with a filament strapping tape and are required to have an 'approved' Anti-Penetration Device (APD) IAW the Society Marshal’s Handbook. Shafted arrows/bolts are not required to have APDs when used in Rapier Combat.
Old - 3.5.3.2.3 Combat arrows that are made for either righthanded use only or lefthanded use only (such as those with tube type or foam wedge type APDs) must be marked in order to prevent the arrows from inadvertently being used on the wrong bow. All righthanded arrows shall be marked with Blue tape or paint around the APD, and all lefthanded arrows shall be marked with Red tape or paint. The recommended method is to apply a strip of 3/4 inch wide (blue or red) plastic tape completely around the APD and shaft after the APD has been mounted. Arrows that can be used with any bow, and crossbow bolts, shall not have either of these colors on their APDs.
New - 3.5.3.2. Remove this rule. We are the only kingdom that has this rule.
Old - 3.5.3.2.4 Wooden and fiberglass shaft arrows/bolts may utilize Baldar Blunt, UHMW, Oerthan Markland, Meridian Markland, Conehead, or Thistle Missile head construction except fiberglass shafted crossbow bolts may not use Thistle Missile blunts for heads. Baldar blunts and Thistle Missile blunts shall not be used in Rapier Combat.
New - 3.5.3.2.4 Fiberglass shaft arrows/bolts may utilize Baldar Blunt, CUBB and UHMW heads. CUBB and Baldar blunts shall not be used in Rapier Combat.
Old - 3.5.3.2.5 Golf tube and Siloflex arrows may utilize any blunt which has been approved on the SCA level for use with those arrow types.
3.5.3.2.5 This rule is redundant, as we are using SCA level ammo rules
Old - 3.5.3.2.6 Golf tube arrows may be gleaned and fired again. A warranted marshal must inspect all other arrows prior to reuse. All arrows shall be clearly marked for identification with the name of the user.
New - 3.5.3.2.6 Siloflex arrows may be gleaned and fired again. A warranted marshal must inspect all other arrows prior to reuse. All arrows shall be clearly marked for identification with the name of the user, home branch and kingdom
3.5.3.2.4 Fiberglass shafted arrows/bolts may use Baldar Blunt or UHMW head construction. Baldar blunts shall not be used in Rapier Combat.
New 3.5.3.2.4 – All ammo used on the rapier field shall have no less than 1 inch of resilient padding after taping. This must be added in front of the blunt and be at least the same diameter as the blunt.
This rule is at the request of Baron Llwyd, current Rapier DEM
Old - 3.6.2.5 Any bow which is struck by a projectile shall be considered as broken and unusable for the duration of a scenario or until after resurrection.
New - 3.6.2.5 – Any bow which is struck by a projectile or melee weapon shall be considered as broken and unusable until a qualified marshal inspects the bow. A qualified marshal is a warranted combat archery marshal or a warranted target archery marshal. This marshal me not be the active user of the bow needing inspection.
As always, please contact me if you have any questions,
