Embarrassing story that took place at Estrella. I can only hope this
wasn't a SCAdian doing this....

Depending on your workplace, might not be work safe. Some companies
frown on retail venting sites. Use your own judgement.

Greetings to all! Mistress M here with a tale from the "war".

Background- The store I work at sells at Ren-faires and Historical
Recreation Events. I usually enjoy working them as we get to have a
little fun and I am a history junkie when it comes to cooking,
costumes and the arts.

This last week we traveled many hours and set up for a week long
recreation event in the desert. It took almost a day to completely
set up but we were enjoying ourselves. A few days later- the storm
came. Dust storm, wind up to 60 miles an hour, and rain (We had a
cricket so I want to say locusts too!). The two of us were franticly
trying to save the booth and our stock. My other half was tying and
lashing everything.

I was packing stock and putting as much as I could (as fast as I
could) in the truck. This went on for hours. Part of the site
evacuated. People were being moved to shelters after collapsing tents
forced them from their campsites.

Most all the merchants including us have been closed for most of the
day. Some are just fighting to keep from losing everything. We saw
wood poles snapping, canvas ripping, stakes pulled out of the ground
and whole pavilions crash & blow away.

A huge gust tore the stakes to our top right out of the ground. I am
hanging on to an edge of a 20x30 plastic rain tarp while my other
half is desperately staking and re-lashing. I literately am trying to
hold the roof on a pavilion in heavy winds & sand/dust.

A person comes out of the dust- I am thinking "yeah-someone to help!".

AH (asshat): Hey can I buy some oils...

Me: You can order online- just tell us you came while we were closed
and we will ship for free.

AH: But I want 3 oils. Can't you sell them to me?

Me: (while leaning back with all my weight and hanging onto the tarp
for dear life.).. we should be open later after the storm....

AH: (Interrupting) But they are for my Girlfriend...

Me: I can't right now, We are about to lose our roof.

AH:(whining) I can't wait, we are leaving now....

I am now thinking- Are you kidding? You are leaving because of the
storm- you see me struggling and don't offer to help but instead
complain I won't sell you 15-30.00 worth of oils?? I should let the
whole booth be destroyed for maybe a $30.00 sale??

Me- I am sorry I can't sell anything right now. If the roof goes we
lose everything.(by this time another person has come and is helping
me hold the tarp- truly most people in this group are wonderful.- now
the dust and wind is so bad I can barely see.)
AH- So you won't sell to me? Fine! (and he stomps off)
Me-WTF??? Seriously??

The wind finally stopped about 9 hours after it started. We survived
the rain, and water leaks. We got most everything packed. I fell
asleep sitting on the wet carpet in a bowl of soup later that
night... (Blessings on my other half who got me into a dry sleeping
bag). The next morning we were able to get the last bits in the truck
and start the long drive home. The tarp was left in a trash at site-
holes and all the grommets pulled out. I know I will be repairing
canvas next week.

I have more faire stories for next time!
