Noble Friends,

Just arrived at the UVA Fine Arts Library: CASTILLOS DE ESPANA, edited
by Javier Bernad Remon (ISBN 9788424135058, our call # DP22 .C42 1997
t.1-3).

If you love castles (and who in the SCA doesn't), this is a very
exciting three volume set. If you read Spanish, so much the better,
since it is all in that language. Not being really familiar with Spain,
I can't say how complete this set is, but with 2004 pages, it looks to
be very, very thorough. The books are divided into geographic regions
and provinces, then cover each castle with a brief textual history and
description, a ground plan, and numerous color photographs. The variety
of Spanish castles is amazing, and those shown range from simple tower
houses, to gigantic mountain-top fortresses. Some tend to be a grim
blocky keep surrounded by walls and mural towers, while others are
delightful turreted fantasies. The text is supported by colored maps of
each district, drawn in an attractive faux-medieval style. Tomo III
includes a generous bibliography and index.

Even if you can't read Spanish (I can't), you will enjoy this set for
its many illustrations and the dreams they will evoke.

Kind regards,

Lord Mungo Napier, Shire of Isenfir's Unofficial Librarian
(aka Garth Groff, UVA Cataloging and Metadata Dept.)
