Uh.  I have learned to receive unsolicited hugs from strangers with good grace, and even give them when it is socially expected (e.g., welcoming someone into an Order) but as an unhuggy person... I have to say that they're not universal.  I'd so much rather a sincere hand-clasp with eye contact and a word of thanks.

Or, you know, applause.  Or requests!  I treasure every request someone's made of me.

I'm a big fan of hugs. They're universal and come in all shapes and sizes.
Drinks, food, and jewelry are all common. You can also go off the beaten
path and offer things like hats. I'm a big fan of the hats!
