Greetings,
yes we are a people of volunteers, but sometimes it is a two way street.
the want or ability to become a person of need is the wish of the person who wants to become something in the first place.
I have never refused a call for help.specially when it comes to marshalling. but if the call for help is not there,
then we cant offer our help in the first place.
I have asked in each event i go to if there is any need for help on or off field.I rarely get taken up on that
because help is always there.it is always good to offer and have someone say all is well then to not ask at all.
some people offer others wait to ask,but in each case if there are no room at the inn to be wanted in the first place,
then the attempt was at least offered.
the reason there are out of area requirements is to insure that there are other eyes seeing the rules and such are followed.
also,if an area is not having enough events, whether fighting, fencing or other wise, then that person trying to become warrented, authorized
ect, needs a chance to get what he needs done.if not then we wont have many people fighting because they cant get authorized.
the same goes for people burning out with helping all the time.they do it because it is the right thing for them to do in there eyes.
because if they dont noone will get to play.also because they offer more times then not because the people holding an event who
needs people to help either dont ask,or the people who do it all the time assume they have to do it because noone offers help, or worse
there is not a call for help.
I have seen many people ask for help and get turned down because the need for help is already done by people who dont fight much and are there already, and on the other shoe, asked for help and the offer was not wanted or needed.
on a final note, people dont want to offer help because after they do it so many times with no one noticing there efforts they feel its all for naught,
or they see other people doing it all the time and feel the need is taken care of already.
for many years in all areas I have been in,i have offered help and was turned down because people of higher rank were there and they wanted to do it all
with people they knew from area,or had people of favor.
alot of factors have to be seen in the scheme of things.if your just a marshal of one ability and not multiple,or dont know alot of
people in your area, you will be looked over because the people who do the services all the time are looked at by the people that
know them or see them all the time.
all you can do is offer and do the best you can.

Subject: Re: [MR] [Marshalls] Fighters by Kingdom
Greetings to the list,
Though I agree that a ratio of 1 marshall to 10 fighters is not a good thing, I would add that a ratio of 1 MOL to 15 fighters is worse. Since not all of the currently warranted MOLs are working in that capacity, the ratio is even larger.
If fighters want to fight, can they not commit to ONE event spent in service, either to marshalling, MOLing, waterbearing, or other support duties??? We are an organization of volunteers, after all, and some service positions are more prone to "burn-out" than others.
In the case of MOLs, many current MOLs receive no benefit from the service they provide (not being fighters) and contribute their own time and money (we do NOT receive reimbursement for postage) to the dream for others.
Please consider becoming warranted in either discipline. We need your help.
With respect,
Lady Martine Picot
MOL and person of no particular import
