I, too, echo this sentiment.
What performers need to remember is that listening, appreciating, being part of the moment, that IS participating. What good is any song if there's no one to hear it? It doesn't matter what someone sings or how well they sing it if it's just unheard noise in an empty place. As a musician, if your music is not doing something for someone, you might as well pack up your gear and call it a night.
All you folks out there who just show up and listen? Thank you.
This has kind of opened my eyes a bit, I had no idea this sort of thing was going on until this discussion came up. On one hand, I would not want to play at such a circle if I found out that people were being pressured and driven off. I would not want to give the illusion that I was okay with that. On the other, I'm fairly certain those sorts of circles wouldn't want us there, anyways. :-DDDD
