Had a similar experience once, although not in the Society. At my last
command in the Navy I was a First Class Petty Officer (equivalent to a Staff
Sergeant), and was in charge of the calibration lab. One day while we were
conducting the weekly major shop cleaning, I noticed an area needing to be
swept, but all my techs were already engaged somewhere else, so I grabbed a
broom and commenced to sweep. One of my techs, a young Third Class Petty
Officer, approached with a dustpan and fox-tail to collect the growing pile
of dirt/dust I'd gathered. He watched me sweeping for a moment or two,
appearing more and more agitated, and then snatched the broom from my hands
saying "It's just not natural having *me* standing here watching *you*
sweep". Didn't matter much to me, the job was there needing to be done, and
I was available.
