Generally, the SCA covers the period 600 to 1600. There is more formal
acceptance of the period before 600 than the period after 1600, but you won't
find a lot of roman period emulators. On the other hand you will meet with no
serious objections to almost any persona. But you probably won't find a lot
of people in any local group in the SCA that do anything other than about 1200
to 1650, except for the vikings who start about 787 (or 793). People will
probably be sympathetic, and will be willing to share what they know, but you
will swiftly find that YOU are the expert on the time and place, and YOU will
be giving the courses at the SCA university for your kingdom, or the collegium
for your barony.
(1600-1650 is not formally part of the SCA period, though you will find
documents that say it is. In any case, I include it because most of the
sources for rapier fencing come from the period 1600-1630, or even
1600-1650.)
