>From the Chirurgeon-in-Charge for this year's Pennsic War - Svanhildr
Karlsdottir, simply known as "Svan".
Excerpts from a message to the Society's Chirurgeons - content for
everyone's consideration:
At this time, I would like to remind everyone that over the years jobs and
expectations for volunteers have evolved and they will continue to do so.
With that, the demand continues to grow. We have a need for Medical as well
as Non-Medical Volunteers. Non-medical Volunteers assist with record
keeping, supply inventory, housekeeping, and other tasks. No certifications
are necessary, just the desire and ability to help out. Chirurgeons (medical
volunteers) who wish to work at Pennsic will need to provide documentation
of certification(s), SCA membership, ID, and warrant.
Chirurgeons-In-Training (CITs) are welcome to work shifts toward completing
their training program, if allowed by their Kingdom Chirurgeon. On-site
first aid, CPR, and related classes are offered through the Pennsic
University with the cooperation and support of the Chirurgeonate.
To expedite the process, I am inviting folk to send me their paperwork in
advance. This way, when you're ready to volunteer at the point, all you need
to do is check in!
Chirurgeons will be available at Point for 12hrs each day starting at 8:00
a.m. July 30th and ending at 8:00 p.m. August 13th for 4hr shifts at a time.
There will also be special event shifts. Special events may consist of
Battle support, Tournaments, and Courts.
Please stop in at Chirurgeons Point and see what we are up to and sign up
for a shift. I'm looking forward to working with all of you.

First Aid Point is located at the corner of Brewer's Road and St. Lawrence
Way <http://www.pennsicwar.org/images/pennu.png> . Our "business hours" are
from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. EMS will be available at the point 24 hours a day,
and can also be accessed by dialing 911, and notifying dispatch that you are
at Cooper's Lake Campground, in Slippery Rock Township.
Volunteers
* If you are a warranted chirurgeon and would like to volunteer,
please stop by with the required paperwork, and we'll get you up and
running.
* If you are not a warranted chirurgeon, and would like to work a
shift towards becoming warranted, please stop in.
* We are only accepting apprentices who have already been approved to
become a chirurgeon through their Kingdom Chirurgeon. If your Kingdom
Chirurgeon is on site, and will approve you on site, then that works too.
Treating Minors
Minors cannot be treated for non life-threatening injuries unless a parent
or court-appointed legal guardian is physically present and gives consent.
Waivers to treat minors that have been signed in advance are not valid in
the state of Pennsylvania and will not be accepted.
Suggestions for a safe and healthy Pennsic:
* Hydrate often with non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic liquids.
* Apply sunscreen often.
* Dress appropriately for different weather conditions.
* On cold nights, wear a cap to bed to reduce heat loss through your
scalp.
* Wear sturdy and comfortable footgear with ankle support (especially
important for combatants)
* Carry emergency medications with you.
* Sanitize, sanitize, sanitize; this includes food preparation and
frequent hand-washing.
* Keep lids closed on toilets to discourage disease-carrying flies.
Plan ahead, bring plenty of any current medications you need, and drink
plenty of water. While we welcome you to stop by First Aid Point, we prefer
a social call over business.
for reference - info from past Pennsics:
Volunteers
We are always in need of volunteers, including both Chirurgeons and
Non-Medical Volunteers.
Non-medical Volunteers assist with record keeping, supply inventory,
housekeeping, and other tasks.
Visit our Volunteer Coordinator at the First Aid Point if you are interested
in being a Non-medical Volunteer or sign up in the "Help Offered" book at
Information Point.
Chirurgeons who wish to work at Pennsic will need to provide documentation
of certification(s), SCA membership and warrant. Chirurgeons-In-Training
(CITs) are welcome to work shifts toward completing their training program,
if allowed by their Kingdom Chirurgeon. On-site first aid, CPR, and related
classes are offered through the Pennsic University with the cooperation and
support of the Chirurgeonate.
Classes
We will be offering First Aid, CPR, and other related classes again this
year. They will be listed in the main class schedule under "Health &
Safety".
For those with Existing Medical Conditions
If you want us to have your medical information on file at Chirurgeons'
Point, please fill in a copy of the Confidential Medical Form and bring it
to Chirurgeons' Point when you arrive. We do request that these not be
mailed due to the sensitive information in them. The form will be in the
on-site Pennsic book, and is also available on-line as a PDF file
<http://www.pennsicwar.org/penn40/GENERAL/ConfidentialMedicalReport.pdf> ,
or a Microsoft word document
<http://www.pennsicwar.org/penn40/GENERAL/ConfidentialMedicalReport.doc> .
The Word document can be completed electronically, the PDF can be printed
and completed by hand.
Stop by Chirurgeon's Point to complete a Confidential Medical Information
form in case of emergency. These forms are kept under lock and key, and are
available only to chirurgeons or EMS personnel in an emergency, in case you
cannot give information yourself.
