Greetings all,
I wanted to take the time and discuss a fun topic.... ARTWORK! The cover of
the Acorn to be specific. This is/was my submission for the Roll of Arms
competition and by the way I can't wait to see what others' have submitted.
I really don't like to toot my horn but I am here to discuss my favorite
topic and maybe get others to try this challenging and yet super fun
competition in the future.
The design was quite an endeavor especially with as many combatants there
were in Crown Tournament. Draw, ink and color 24 shields that are less than
inch tall? Yikes! Hahaha. The artwork for the cover though was originally on
11" by 14" piece of Canson vellum paper and I used Reeves gouache and
Windsor & Newton Acrylic for blue, gold and silver. The design itself is
based on a 15th century engraving of the personal arms of Charles the Bold
as seen here:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Wappentafel_Karl_der_Kuehne.jpg. It is
actually pure coincidence, that I choose this specific historical person's
arms for reference, which just so happens to match the theme of HRHs
upcoming Coronation theme of the "100 Years War." I had a folder of a few
images I was pondering over and choose it weeks before Crown Tournament.
If you have not been able to see the artwork, no fear, I updated my Deviant
Art webpage and you can view it here:

There are some obvious differences and as well as additions styled in the
manner which would befit the theme, Kingdom, etc. I didnt like the lion's
faces at all so I replaced them with a different version. In the outside
edges are shields of the all combatants in order of precedence starting from
the top. *Thanks for those who helped me make sure I didnt miss anyone and
have the right order.* The finalists are the two larger shields inside, near
the center, and above the winner supported by the lions. This, the largest
shield, belonging to HRH Cuan and there are some tweaks I added. First was
changing the Cordon for the Order of the Golden Fleece to what Ive seen HRH
wearing in pictures. The other was replacing the fleur-de-lis crest with a
golden thistle to represent part his consort's, HRH Padraigin's, heraldry. I
have no idea however if that is acceptable in terms of drawing full
achievement rules but I utilized artistic license.
Last but not least the design was based an engraving so only parts of the
overall piece are in color. I had contemplated leaving it purely black and
white just like the source, but I am happy with the colored version
especially with the metals added. It was truly a piece I had a hard time
letting go of.

Lady Rohesia Anven of Thessalonike
