It's not the only way, but it is considered the most efficient/cost effective method for residential use over the long term (decades). That is the first stage filtration I have on my home system. I don't think anyone would want to take a 40gal salt tank and softener system with them to Pennsic. Activated charcoal, and VOC filters do the same job, but not as cost effectively over the long term. That's the trade off for portability.
