Noble friends (especially Scots),
There is a tiff going on between Scotland and England again, this time
over a letter supposedly taken from him at the time of his arrest:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-12262174 .
So maybe the letter isn't authentic. Or maybe it is. I would not be
surprised if Edward I kept it as a grim trophy over the capture and
brutal execution of his most hated enemy. Another interesting point:
during the Scottish wars of Independence, Edward ordered his agents to
seize any documents, charters, histories, whatever from the Scots
(including monasteries). The documents were to be sent to London, or
else destroyed. The aim of this looting was to deprive the Scots of
their history, any claims to independence, and especially land tenure.
If knights wanted to hold land or titles, they would have to bow before
Edward and swear allegiance to him.
A most interesting document.
Kind regards,
Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
