first of all, I ate the 12Th night feast and I was full and happy when I left the table. Did I eat every dish? No, but I tried every single one. Now I can add a few new dishes to my list of favorites.
One of my companions went back to the hotel and ordered delivery.
lots of folks are so used to eating fast food, they don't appreciate food that isn't loaded with salt, or covered in some gloppy, fat laden, sauce. I knew a chef that had two severely obese teenage sons, because she couldn't make healthy food they would eat.
I have a friend that doesn't like the food at the Melting Pot. I took two friends out to a very expensive restaurant, they ordered their meals and then stated they only liked the coconut cake. The meal they ate and didn't like included New York strip steak and cost over $200.00. Yet they love the food at Showmar's.
Some folks just can't appreciate food they have not eaten before. Too bad. When you travel, trying the native foods is part of the experience. When my coworkers with FEMA and I were in Wilmington in October, I suggested we go out for local BBQ of fish, you know where they went? Bonefish Grill. A good restaurant, but with excellent local cuisine nearby, why go somewhere you can eat at back home? I had local food I had never had before, like flour burgers.
I have feastcratted dozens of feasts and I have had kings ask me not to cook period food, because they hated it. I have eaten rubber chicken, undercooked or overcooked rice, and then I ate so much savory toasted cheese, I told my cardiologist it caused my second clogged artery.
It's rare that everyone likes every dish. Really. I once had a traditional Smorgasbord at a feast, everyone raved about it. Except the person who couldn't eat fish and wouldn't eat pork. All feastcrats run into this. Sometimes food doesn't get cooked enough, or the soup gets scorched a little. Every person who cooks, has mishaps. Even Professional chefs, like Bobby Flay and Gordon Ramsey have stuff go wrong and loose competitions to amateurs. If you have a food problem, let the feast crat know as soon as the event is announced. Or eat out. Or bring your food.
My mother said that a lady never spits anything out, unless it is poisonous. You swallow it, smile, and decline seconds. If you are a Lady or Lord in the SCA, please do likewise. Comment about the food amongst yourselves, but don't broadcast it to everyone around, especially people who have cut themselves, stood on their feet on hard floors for two days, with aching feet and backs, getting hot, greasy, and dirty, unless you are willing to do the same.
Congrats to the feastcrat and crew from 12Th night. I'll eat and work with you any time.
