Congratulations on your growing interest in the SCA and desire to start
forming a branch.  First I do want to point out that you and local friends
can get together to work on A&S activities or have a fighter practice at
your whim without having to be a formal branch or drive to Asheville.   Just
do your Barony a favor and keep them up to date on your gatherings and
ensure, fighter practices specifically, that SCA policies are being
followed.  Your Baronial officers can help you with that, and if you have
any problems, please let us know, and we will help get you the assistance
needed.

However, if you have a number of people in the local area who are active SCA
members, the idea of forming a formal branch can be explored.  My suggestion
would be to see how many people you have and begin some sort of regular SCA
gatherings.  When that is stable and you have enough people we can venture
into the pros and cons of a formal branch and what you need to become one.
