as someone that has done the job, both as a merchant and as a royal, i would
suggest that most of "us" really dont care if you rise when we enter your (i
think thats important too, it is your "home") place. personally i do not,
never have, and should i have the good fortune to do the job again, never
will. there is a time for formality of course. i have walked into a
merchants booth in full regalia and had a merchant suddenly stop dealing
with a patron to recognize me. the times that has happened have always made
me very uncomfortable. if you recognize a royal person i think its always
in good taste to acknowledge them. its probably ok to ask your patron to
excuse you for a moment to see if that king/queen/prince/princess needs
something immediately (since our time is hardly ever...... ours) and, if
not, tell that royal that you will be with them in a second and finish up
your business with your patron. opinions will vary and, of course, there
may be some royals that think the world stops when they are present. i do
not suggest, nor find, fault in that feeling but would add that not all of
"us" do. play it by ear and so long as you mean no offense in your actions
none should be taken. if your actions cause them distress simply explain
your intent. if they hold an innocent intent against you so be it, ignore
it and have fun anyway. some folks are, so ive heard, really full of
themselves because they won a tourney and got a title. but they are rare,
very rare, and do not reflect everyone that holds that position.

Good Gentles,
I do in all cases agree with the requirements for Courtesy. But what, may I
ask, is the proper behavior for a merchant when Royalty, or former Royalty,
enters the booth? In many cases a merchant artisan is working upon
something and rising is...complicated. In others, the merchant may be
unfamiliar with the particular Royal insignia.
I think especially of many of the situations at the Pennsic Wars. Such as
Midnight Madness where Royalty may be in and out of the merchant enrions.
Guidance would be appreciated.
C Chabrier
