Brewing competitions in Atlantia frequently include well crafted modern beverages with historical refererence.  The BJCP Guide is useful for style. We try to have at least one of our three judges with a strong grounding in historical references as well.  Sorry, didn't mean to imply the modern style guide was the only thing we used.
