Discouraging or "nasty" comments are uncalled for; on the other hand,
I also encourage everyone to look at comments in the same light as
Internet communication, since you often don't see the persons face.
Some comments are made in good faith to assist, but can be taken as
condescending or even rude.

Still, when I run a display or competition, I try to do several things:

1) If you tell people that something isn't going to count, or isn't
required, make sure your judges are aware. For others: Remember that
the judges may not have been chosen until the day of, and if they are
just given a standard A&S judging form, they are going to fill it out.

2) Check the comment and judging sheets. I will often remove comments
that I find offensive. I also don't recommend giving out the scoring
sheets unless someone asks for them.

3) Find at least one good thing in every entry to comment on. I have
yet to see an entry that I couldn't find something praiseworthy about.

I am terribly sorry to hear that people have had such bad experiences,
and I hope that those who have stopped showing their work will please
reconsider, and not hide your work from the populace just because of a
few.
