[MR] interested in learning about Chirurgeons?

Yes, Philippa's article is a good one to read if you wish to know a bit more about what a Chirurgeon does in Atlantia as well as other Kingdoms in the Known World. Some nomoclature has changes since she wrote the article (instead of Apprentice, Journeyman and Master Chirurgeons, ones trains as a Chirurgeon-in-training (CIT), becomes a warrented Chirurgeon, and then with experience and service is recognized as a Mentor Chirurgeon), but what we do is the same.

Chirurgeons have one foot in the Middle Ages and one foot in modern safety and first aid. We serve the attendees at an Event to help ensure they have a safer Event and advise them to higher level of care if that is needed. But if you ask any Chirurgeon, they may regale you (or gross you out) with how folks thought of medical care during various times and cultures in the past. I assure you, medical care has improved over the past 500 years or so! We will not bleed you or clean with a tinture of hot turpentine!

So, if you are coming to Atlania's 30th Year, I invite you to come by Chirurgeon's Point beside the Battlefields and talk to us at any time during the Event. There will be a Meet and Greet at Chi Point on Friday evening from 6-8ish. And there will be an introductory Chirurgeon 101 class on Saturday morning about 9am at Chi Point before the Prosession.

If you are not able to come to Atlantia's 30th Year Celebration, I believe there will be a Chirurgeon classes track at the next Atlantian University. Or at any Event, find the Chirurgeons and talk to them. Or just go to our website  (http://chirurgeon.atlantia.sca.org/). Master Andreas or any of the other Chirurgeons in Atlantia will be glad to answer your questions and help you along your way to becoming an Atlantian Chirurgeon!

Your in Service,
Blitha of Wolfhou
Chirurgeon In Charge of Atlantian 30th Year Celebration
coming soon this Labor Day weekend!

<<< Are you CPR certified and have a current medical certification (Red Cross First Aid or higher certification)? Are you interested in serving your fellow SCAdians at Events by helping provide a First Aid presence on site? Are you just curious about what a Chirurgeon does?

Then you may be interested in learning more about what Chirurgeons do and how to become a Chirurgeon in the great Kingdom of Atlantia!? >>>

This isn't specific to Atlantia, but people curious about the Chirurgeons, might wish to check out this file in the SCA-INC section of the Florilegium:
2b-Chirurgeon-art (18K) 6/30/02 "So you want to be a Chirurgeon" by Philippa Ferraria.

Perhaps this would give you some ideas for questions you might wish to ask at the Atlantian 30th Year Celebration.
