People want to think that if they do everything right all the time, they will be immune to the horrible things that happen in the world. We hear about something awful happening to a kid somewhere, and the first thing we do is start looking for the reason it happened, someone's oversight or negligence or stupidity. Anything we can grab at. We want to blame the parent, to find some fault or lack with them. So we can tell ourselves it can't happen to us and our families, because we aren't like them. We're better parents than that.
Because if we don't hold onto that fallacy and convince ourselves of that, then we have to confront that awful Great Truth that it could happen to us, too.
And that's too awful to think about.
Should you watch your kids and be responsible for them? Of course. Can bad stuff happen to responsible, vigilant people?
Do I even really need to answer that?
