[MR] Off the wall Idea

i read some of the things posted on a local county blog site when i heard
about that situation in elkin. basically it boiled down to a small handful
of religious hillbillies that fear anything they dont understand ranting
about "evil pagans" and the like. most of the posts on that blog thing were
unconcerned, some even mocking the worst of them. still, the sheriff felt
the need to "check things out" which is understandable.

yes, the media often times does a poor job of representing the sca. ive
been interviewed by several newspapers and one national magazine and its
amazing how incorrectly things were written. we aid that when, like in the
cbs sunday morning report on gulf wars, we do things that go against our
supposed mission goal. some will remember the whole mini piano being thrown
off the fort wall during that show and the "nasty old viking" with his
t-shirt under his bad tunic. these things distracted from an otherwise
fairly good video.

still, if we are putting something together (we meaning sca folks) this
shouldnt happen. if someone wanted to put together a decent quality video
giving a basic overview of the sca and post it online i dont see how it
would be a negative thing. there are hundreds of them already out there and
a small handful are decent. i see no reason to discourage the effort
personally. in the past word of mouth was our greatest recruiting tool. i
think this still remains the number one opportunity but todays world is
different. in a report this morning 70% of people claimed to never turn
their smart phones off and 1/3 said they would give up sex rather than give
up their smart phones. the sca faces many distractions and many other forms
of personal entertainment that require nearly zero effort. one of those is
the online "world" and videos are a huge part of that. why not reach out to
that "world" more?

So are you arguing that keeping our public profile low by discouraging media
coverage will cause fewer of these incidents? I doubt it.

If more people know who and what we are and do then they will see us as
harmless at worst and maybe someone they should check out at best.

I've heard multiple versions of the story you site, but if I recall, they
all seem to have more to do with locals confusing us with Wiccans or
Pagans who had used the site in the past. If more people had seen stories
about us, would they have made that mistake?
