I personally would discourage people from making these '2x4 + fiberglass
rod' style crossbows.
While technically legal in Atlantia (given that weapons are except from
appearance laws), they do not present the appearance of a 'medieval
crossbow' in any form, and stick out therefore on the battlefield as
'modern equipment'.
That's not to say that you can't manage to disguise them / construct
them in ways that create a more medieval appearance. Just rarely this
is done, as that gets around the original goal of these crossbows, which
is to have a $20 quick weapon.
Not to mention the fact that these fiberglass rods are not designed for
the stress that is placed upon them when used as a crossbow prod. And
thereby have a tendency to delaminate over time, and therefore require
semi-regular replacement.
In Service,
Siegfried
PS. Full Disclosure, I am a crossbow maker for those that don't know, as
well as sell prods for combat crossbows. Feel free to take that into
account with my words. But I do care deeply about the appearance of
Atlantia's Army, especially the Combat Archery Corps.
