[MR] the right wood books to start with

I have a friend who has a bunch of tools and makes some great benches but his wood projects are not documented very well.

I was thinking of getting him a copy of Medieval Furniture (can't remember the author) but I'm wondering if that's the right way to start.  I had a vague recollection that some wood people didn't like that book for one reason or another but I can't remember why.

What should a new wood furniture person be reading to get pointed in the right direction on Medieval furniture?

Keep in mind he's not a beginning wood person but a lot of his stuff is just not documented very well.
