Greetings all!
Many of you may have noticed the letter from the Clerk of Precedence
requesting award recommendations. Here are some things to consider:
Remember that you do not need to have that award (or be a member of that
order) to recommend someone else for the award. Please take a minute to
look at what award you feel best suits the person's activity. For
example, you/ could/ recommend a fighter to the Order of the Chivalry,
however, if he has been a part of the SCA for only a year or so and,
while skilled, has not yet reached a skill level where he is successful
in the majority of his fights or excels in all aspects required of a
Knight, a Silver Osprey might be a more reasonable recommendation.

Please be as specific as you can about what activities or artwork you
have personally observed (and if possible at what event) so that Their
Majesties have as much information as possible to base Their decision
upon. If you do not know what events they will be attending please
state what is the person's home group. However, knowing what events
they will be attending is a HUGE help when Their Majesties are planning
Their courts. /Update the recommendation/ if you learn what events the
person you recommend will be attending.
And (if you love your heralds) it is extremely helpful if you know both
the modern and SCA name of the person for whom you are making the
recommendation. Often the Baron and Baroness will be familiar with the
person you wish to recommend so you could get more information from
them. If, not, then send what you know.
And (if you love your scribes) think about how long it takes to make a
scroll. Send in your award recommendation in time for Their Majesties
to make a decision, contact the Clerk Signet, assign a scroll and have
it delivered to the event. If you send in your recommendation two days
before the event you expect them to attend, not only is it reducing the
chance that the award will be given, it gives the scribes no time to
create a beautiful scroll for the worthy individual. It is best to send
the recommendation as soon as possible rather than wait until it is
close to an event Their Majesties will be attending.
Recommendations from the populace _are_ heard.
Baroness Tegan de Moreton
Undine Pursuivant
Clerk of the Signet
