Thank you Alexandra for posting this missive

My Lord, welcome to Atlantia!!! and thank you for your service!

Many new people tend to fear the very things you fear, mostly focus on not
giving due respect to someone above your/their own station, however, you will
find that 99.999% of folks (at least in my findings) will never fault a new
comer that doesn't bow on automatic when a peer passes by. I believe the banter
here regarding what can we do for newcomers what more about "what are WE doing
wrong or not doing enough of!! as veterans of the game". HOWEVER, since you
brought it up

what if what I think the designated smoking area actually isn't? Ask event
staff where that area is

what I drink some water in the wrong place? not possible!!
What if I see someone more important than my lowly self but don't recognize them
as such? see above
What if my garb doesn't match the theme of the event? MANY people do not follow
the event theme but stick with their own period constantly. you will be fine!!
I want to get into heavy fighting too, but with my income I feel it's just
easier to start out as plastic-man from the neck down...but how would

I cover it up? thin leather or heavy fabric epoxied onto plastic can look quite
nice, or use garb to cover armour.
My wife will be about 8 months pregnant at this event and she doesn't want to
get some maternity garb that she'll wear for one event and it

will collect dust afterwards. If she is playing in the same period as you,
Italian lends itself quite nicely to loose gowns that wear nicely with or
without the baby bump!

When all else fails, you are on the Merry Rose, or at least receiving messages,
feel free to privately email myself or really anyone contributing to the new
comer thread with questions or concerns.

Good luck and again welcome to Atlantia.
In service
Lady Caterine St. Loe

Greetings, M'lady. I've been trying to post a reply to this topic but it's not
posting. Would you be able to post the below for me?
10,000 thanks in advance

Hail and well met, friends. I've been trying to follow this thread and I am
really confused now but I hope not to hijack the thread. Let me preface by
saying that I'm a demi-newcomer. I'm also not trying to be rude or
disrespectful to anyone here. One of my flaws is inadvertently offending people

with what I'm saying because I'm not an effective communicator. I've been
involved in the society since late summer 2009 when I was in Drachenwald (MKA
Kandahar, Afghanistan). Obviously there, as a US Marine, I couldn't really work

on garb...but anyways, I had a great time learning about the SCA from Laurels,
Barons and just old-timers (and where I discovered my love of rapier). Now that

I'm back, I'm with my local shire and all but still have yet to attend an
event. My home-made garb is still a work-in-progress but come mid November,
I'll have some really sharp looking 16th century English garb and Japanese garb.
I guess my point of concern here is I'm seeing a lot of input in the thread
about what people can and can't do and I'm about to give myself an anxiety
attack when prepping for my first event (hopefully 12th Night). I mean, what if

what I think the designated smoking area actually isn't, or if I drink some
water in the wrong place? What if I see someone more important than my lowly
self but don't recognize them as such? What if my garb doesn't match the theme
of the event? I want to get into heavy fighting too, but with my income I feel
it's just easier to start out as plastic-man from the neck down...but how would
I cover it up? My wife will be about 8 months pregnant at this event and she
doesn't want to get some maternity garb that she'll wear for one event and it
will collect dust afterwards.
I guess as the event gets closer and closer I become more afraid that I'll
accidently offend someone, break the kingdom laws and/or be asked to leave.
There is just a lot more to the SCA than I had originally anticipated and
frankly, it can be overwhelming.
Many thanks in advance.
