I wish we had something like the old promissory 'scrolls' to have at events.
Yes, I know the scribes are shuddering right now. But I remember when I used
to take a pile of blanks and ink pens with me to events and just sit in the
hall, creating promissaries. There was _always_ an ever-changing group of
people coming up to help me, and a very nice mix of new and old ones, at
that. A lot of friendships were formed over those projects. And a whole lot
of 'welcome to the SCA' information informally passed on. The conversations
were usually relaxing and enjoyable.
I have never been able to come up with something so attractive to a diverse
group of individualist, so perfect for getting strangers together to become
friends. I know that our standards of authenticity have grown beyond those
simple scrolls and in this one case, I regret the change.
We had a lot of fun, and made a lot of friends, in the name of "contributing
to the King and Queen". maybe one of you can think of something that would
work in the same way? Portable, attractive, and easy enough to do to draw in
a variety of people for an hour or two?
