ummm actually the charter and introduction do say that. and the word
"attempt" simply means that. an attempt, for example, at pre-17th century
garb isnt blue jeans under a tunic. neither is an undisguised coleman chair
an attempt at a pre-17th century chair (although the only thing that is
mentioned is garb as a requirement for attending an event in this context).
from corpora:
We sponsor events such as tournaments and feasts where members dress in
clothing styles worn in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and participate in
activities based on the civil and martial skills of the period. These
activities
recreate aspects of the life and culture of the landed nobility in Europe
prior to 1600 CE. The dress, pastimes, and above all the chivalric ideals of
the period serve to unify our events and activities.
and as for events they are defined:
A. Society Events Defined
The term "Society event" refers to tournaments, feasts, and other activities
whereby participants can display the results of their researches into the
culture and technology of the period in an environment which evokes
the atmosphere of the pre-17th century European Middle Ages and Renaissance.
i suppose someone could suggest that since the charter doesnt specifically
state "please dont have blatantly modern things in sight" that must mean
they are ok. however, it would be hard to justify that given how the sca
and its events are defined above. if that were the case it also doesnt say
"dont fly your ny giants flag while listening to the game on your boom box
while watching the archers shoot". but thats kind of silly even if the
giants are on a tear and sooooo much better than the cowboys! the sca
doesnt try to suggest it is a historical reenactment society like some of
the civil war folks. it is, however, supposed to be a little like a living
history society for the study and enjoyment of those folks interested in the
many cultures of the middle ages. perhaps one step below the civil war
folks but also a few steps above many of the more larp-like (although i
think we classify as a larp as do the civil war groups) magical foam weapon
clubs. it deserves our support and most folks think, our respect.
the usage of the whole "attempt" thing allows us a lot more leeway. for
example, i only wear linen pants. some folks wear sweatpants. while some
refuse and wear jeans. only one of those three fails as an attempt, at
least in appearance.

Greetings. I'm pretty sure with this I will need my flame proof suit.
There is no rule about covering modern things. There is a rule about
attempting but that does not say where that line for an attempt would be.
For some it's about covering. For others it's about throwing a tabard over
sweats.
Yes, if you want to create the environment, you should cover, hide and pull
out stuff. But a rule. Nope there isn't one.
Pass the fire extinguisher please I feel I may need it.

How about enforcing the SCA's policies about covering modern things, not
drinking from soda cans in common areas, and not smoking in main areas of
the event.
I think that we should talk a cue or two from the civil war and rev war
people.
They hid it or leave it at home.
The other thing is our speech. I don't think we need to speak "forsoothly"
but I don't want to talk about what was on tv last night, or who is running
for public office. That is what facebook is for in my opinion. And I am just
a guilty as anyone else of doing these things but, I have set goals for
myself to improve. And I hope others will too!
