Don Etherington and Monique Lallier are two of the world's most
respected and honored bookbinders. Born in England and Montreal,
respectively, they have undertaken projects for clients around the
globe, and they have spent much of their careers teaching others the art
and craft of what they do. They now live in Summerfield, North
Carolina. Don's reference library and papers are in the Special
Collections of the UNC-G Library.
Don Etherington began bookbinding at the age of thirteen as a student at
the Central School of Arts and Crafts and later went on to study
bookbinding and design at the London School of Printing. Since then, he
has held positions at the Biblioteca Nazionale in Florence, The Library
of Congress, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the
University of Texas at Austin, Information Conservation, Inc., and now
Etherington Conservations Services in Browns Summit. . In 1982, he
co-authored with Matt Roberts Bookbinding and the Conservation of Books:
A Dictionary of Descriptive Terminology, the first comprehensive attempt
to compile terminology from all the bookmaking and conservation fields.
Monique Lallier began her studies in the 1960s in Montreal at Cotnoir
Cappone School of Fashion & L'Art de la Reliure book binding school with
Simone B. Roy. She continued on to Paris, with Roger Arnoult, Centro Del
Bel Libro in Ascona, with Edwin Heim and Solothurn, Switzerland with
Hugo Peller. She has won many awards for her bindings, and is the former
Director of the American Academy of Bookbinding. Her work has been
exhibited widely in such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art
and the Smithsonian Institution in the U.S., and at the Bibliotheque
Nationales in both Paris and Montreal.
Collections of her bindings may be found in the private library of Pope
John Paul II, McGill University, LSU, and UNCG, as well as in public and
private collections in the USA, Canada, Europe and Japan.
You do not have to attend the talk to purchase a signed copy. Just
request a signed copy when you order. Signed copies will mail shortly
after the talk. If you order at www.johnnealbooks.com

B3323. Constructing and Covering Boxes: A Beginner's Guide by Tom &
Cindy Hollander. 2009. 64pp. 8.5"x11". Paper $14.95
If you want to make boxes, you need to buy this book. It is a treasure.
Tom and Cindy present very thorough instruction for only two box
projects: a hinged box and a clamshell box. Each stage of the box is
broken down into detailed steps, each illustrated with a good color
photo. (There are over 230 photos in the book.) Using the book is
similar to having a master box maker demonstrating the construction for
you and also showing you all the small techniques that are so important
in a well-crafted box.
First, they show and tell you the tools and materials you will need and
why you need them. Then they present how to determine the grain of book
board, bookcloth, and paper. Next is cutting board and covering
materials, followed by two pages and thirteen instructional photos
presenting the essentials of gluing. Now you are ready to learn how to
make the two boxes! At the end of the book are fill-in-the-blank
worksheets to figure each of the pieces needed for different sizes of
the two boxes, plus a glossary and thirty examples of boxes to inspire
you. Dimensions are given in inches.
Thread that Binds by Pamela Train Leutz. 2010. 352pp. 6"x9".
B3221. Hardcover $55.00
B3222. Paper $34.95
Comprised of 21 interviews of independent bookbinders in a quest to
learn about the lives of representatives of this field. Each chapter
tells a different story. You discover the challenges, successes, and
"common threads" among each of the binders. Includes images offering a
closer look at these bookbinders' studios, as well as photographs of the
bookbinders themselves. Each binder is introduced to us first by Pamela
Leutz; the interview follows. A special interview with bookbinder Don
Etherington is included. An excellent book for those considering working
on their own in the field of bookbinding.
B3356. Bookbinding: A Step-by-Step Guide by Kathy Abbott. 2010. 160pp.
10.2"x8.5". Paper $29.95
