No betting to it.  We've compared event reports for the same event year to year, and with everything else about the event being about as equal as can be, the royal presence always increased attendance well more than enough to compensate for the royals themselves not paying.  So not only is it the polite thing to do for Their Majesties, it makes financial sense as well.
