I see your point and agree with it to a certain point.  Most places I
know only comp the autocrat and head cook, although the kitchen staff
usually gets to eat from the leftovers after plates have gone to the
tables.

One point though, supplies for an event and prizes should be paid for
by the event, not by private individuals unless they choose to
volunteer the money.  Even then you should keep the receipts so that
it can be written off on your taxes.
