There are more qualified exchequers to address this than I, but ever since
the SCA became a registered 501c3, who gets comped is a touchy subject.
We're supposed to be open to the public, so that previous concept of an open
sign-up sheet to work as comped kitchen staff was brilliant.  For another
example, a Baron attending Gulf Wars or Pennsic can't be reimbursed for gas
unless they hold court while there.  Unless they hold court, their unique
necessity hasn't been established.  So when thinking of comps, check with
your exchequer.
