I borrowed a two volume set of books from Master Finnr (now deceased)
about agriculture and commerce in that time frame. Although that sounds
really slow, it was actually full of interesting stuff, like where and
how they mined salt and where the salt was taken for trade, etc. so you
could see who would have had access and how much it might cost. But I
can't for the life of me remember the title. I can ask a few friends of
his who are early period types and might know the work I'm thinking of.
I have a nice little book called "Anglo Saxon Leechcraft". Although
it's about medicine, food and herbs are very much a part of early
medicine and can give you some indications of what was available. Some
of the references are as early as your time frame. Author Wellcome, The
