The mark of what people are willing to pay is attendance. If attendance
drops off and expensive events have a hard time making their money back,
then the type of event will likely change. It seems that has not yet
happened.

I do not know of anything that is cost competitive with the SCA that
provides as much value. To combine other poster's comments, even a 50%
change in the fee (say 15.00 to 7.50) makes a minor difference in total
cost to the individual after travel, food, lodging, etc but a huge
difference in the available amenities at the site.

Cheap, local events are great. They still require work, staff and a
budget (generally). They do not make up the totality of the SCA
experience for most of us, nor do we want the to do so. There is
absolutely nothing wrong with having more of them, though.
