Considering that  SCA events are never (in my experience ) less than half a day long and that the choice to be on feast is usually less than a very basic meal @ even a highschool sproting event ( with far more food choices!) I am very impressed that the average SCA event as maintained it's prices as well as the have form 20 odd years.
My husband works  part time in professional sports, and when every i go to a game, if I do not even buy a bottle of water...because you are not allowed to bring t your own in, I end up spending 12 dollars for a seat  (Granted for approx 3 hours ) and less than a quart of water.
I try eat there anymore except for family night, when  hot dogs and frenchfries , sold by different booths, sell for a dollar a serving and you muct stand in line through a good portion of the openoing of the game to get an order..then go stand in another. in order to have dinner for 2 dollars.
We are underemployed and have a LOT of money problems....but the SCA is still one of the best deals around..even driving 5 hours to an event.
car pooling cuts down on transportation costs when everybody chips in, somehow.
Bartering with other event goers is also an option....chances are everyone has some thing they can trade, to come to an arrangement that will help them both enjoy the event.(some things I have done, sewing, babysitting, driving, ironing, in my younger and healthier days, helping packing and loading, cooking then packing and serving an off-board feast  or all the food for the week end
years ago, many events had a quiet "crashspace"  sort of underground.....dont see it much anymore...

Ive never seen a whole week end of fun for (including everything,)meals, travel, good company, and yes the planned entertainment, for approxe 30 per person in this century but in the current middle ages...it is a reality.
Yes, Iv'e had to make adjustments ( one o fhtme being breaking my  poor newbie husband into it all, snicker...he is consantly surprised at how it all comes together ) but we  have also had 20 x the fun for our money  time and effort and it was/ is worth it.

This is an interesting discussion subject and one that I, as a long time
autocrat, have wrestled with for years.  However, It is frequently the cost
of getting to an event rather than the actual site fee that determines
whether or not I can afford to go to an event.  Keeping the event fees at a
reasonable level will help those who must travel longer distances to reach
an event but it doesn't guarantee that it will make the overall cost
affordable.  With fuel running between $2.50 and $3.00 a gallon and the
potential for a motel cost as well, I look very closely at events over a 5
hour drive away from home. Even with the current increases in some event
fees the event cost is still well under the cost of many non-SCA
activities.  It's just more expensive to get to some of the SCA events so
those on limited incomes tend to play closer to home where they can afford
to attend the events.
