How about this:
 
Everyone who wants to be a coronet for the next term stands outside of a circle of, say, ten meters radius.  In the very center of this circle is the actual coronet, seated on a velvet cushion on a pedestal.  On a count of three, everyone runs to the center and tries to grab the coronet and take it outside the circle.  The first person to successfully do so gets to be the next prince.  Additional rules:  no armor or weapons allowed, but all rules for a standard MMA match apply, including "guillotines" and that sort of thing.
 
Now does that about cover it?
