DC specifically, admittedly years ago, but there was a bit of armor on
display at the Smithsonian Museum last time I went. A quick google looks
like they have a "castle" of sorts:

I've not been to it before, but I would wager the armor displays would be
rare or non-existent, since most Smithsonian seems to be more of US history
of course.
The best armor museum trip I've taken (besides England) around here would be
The Met in NY. There is a train that runs to NY that may leave from or near
DC.
