It is not a marlinspike; it is indeed a spindle, very similar in design to the Hebridean spindle.  If the lady is on Ravelry, have her go to the Spindle Lore group, where they have a thread on this design.  Or you or she may contact me offlist at the_spanishpeacock AT comcast.net.
