*ROYAL BREWER COMPETITION*
*Kingdom Arts and Sciences Festival*
*March 6, 2010***
*Hellenic** **Community Center**, **Newport News**, **VA***
*Categories* include mead/wine, beer/ale, and (preferably medieval!)
cordials. Each person may enter up to two beverages (one bottle of each
beverage) per category for a maximum of six bottles/beverages. Each person
must enter at least three different beverages (not necessarily three
different types of beverage - you can enter two different beers and a mead,
for example). If you are submitting a cordial, we STRONGLY encourage you to
base your cordial on a period recipe. Sipping cordials are a later
invention.
*Presentation* Bottle either appropriately to your beverage's period, or in
standard modern competition format. Firmly attach a label to EACH bottle (
SEE NOTE below).
Modern competition format means beers can be corked in a clear 750 ml
bottle, or capped in a beer bottle. Wines are corked in a clear 750 ml
bottle. Fill the bottle to one inch below the cork or cap. Cordials are
presented in a nice container. Avoid modern logos on caps or bottles! We
want to be able to see your beverage as soon as possible; you are scored on
appearance, so a clear glass bottle is helpful. DO attach a label to each
bottle you submit, with the name of your beverage (including category if
it's not clear from the name) and your SCA name. Make sure they match the
names at the top of your documentation, and the entry form you will complete
when you arrive. Labels can be tied to the neck or done in another period
way if you wish.
*Documentation* We want to see the historical recipe you chose, your
redaction of it, and lessons learned/what you'd change next time. Show us
your book sources; there should be a short bibliography. Please put the
ingredients on the first page so that any judge with a food allergy can
check your ingredients easily. Remember to include your SCA name and the
name of your beverage at the top, and make sure they match the label you
attach to your bottle and your entry form.
Note: You will also complete the personal information at the top of a blank
scoring sheet. Leave the bottle, documentation, and scoring sheet together
at the judging station. All three should have your SCA name and the name of
your beverage on them.
*Essay* You can earn up to 100 points on your judging form on the day of the
competition. Each contestant will be given an extra ten points IF they
complete a short essay ahead of time and deliver it to the current Royal
Brewer (address information below). The essay should briefly discuss what
being Royal Brewer would mean to them, and how they would use the office to
promote the art of Brewing in Atlantia. There is no grading the essay; if
you submit one on time, you get ten extra points. Make sure to put your SCA
name at the top.
The essay should be delivered to Lady Sorcha Crowe NO LATER than February
28, 2010. Either email it: ebpayne at yahoo.com, or put it in the post (with
time for it to get to me before the 28th):
Elspeth Payne
505 Kerwin Court
Silver Spring, MD 20901-1753
*Scoring* The entries will be judged by the presiding Royal Brewer, a
representative of Their Majesties, and a representative of the Minister of
Arts and Sciences. Each person's top three scores will be averaged; the
person with the highest average score will be announced in Court as Their
Majesties' new Royal Brewer! If there is a tie, the presiding Royal (or
their Representative) will determine the winner. Competitors are encouraged
to stay at the judging table if they wish during the judging. Please do not
offer comments on entries unless a judge asks you specifically about one of
your own.
