[MR] [Carrying A] OT: Pirate Pistol

A couple of points not yet mentioned. A pistol that does not fire fixed
ammunition (muzzle loader, etc) is still considered a pistol in Virginia,
Pennsylvania (Pennsic), though not in Maryland. This means that if you carry
it concealed you will be committing a criminal offense--one that often has a
mandatory minimum prison sentence. "Open carry" is legal in Virginia, but not
in Pennsylvania. Wearing your cloak or cape over your pistol is probably
"concealment".
Furthermore, if you look at firearms books, most firearms including some
military arms, are engraved, or adorned with precious metals, etc. The Denix
models (reproductions) are castings, and will imitate the firearms of the
Pirate period. And, since they can't be fired, won't require you to be
familiar with gun laws.
And there are, to my knowledge and belief, no venues in the SCA in which
firearms are used. They are dangerous, and there are legal issues, so they are
not used. I see little chance of this changing. There are other groups of
reenactors that do use firearms, but not the SCA.
So I would suggest spending $50 or less to get a reproduction. If you want a
gun, you can get some 18th C flintlocks or 19th C caplocks ("Kentucky
Pistols", etc) at gun stores. These are about $250 and up, and are munitions
grade (plain, no engraving, no inlays, etc). They can be fired, though not
within the SCA, and subject to the laws of the various states.
