drop spindle spinning!
    Here is a quick class description - Drop Spinning:  Learn to
create your own yarn for knitting, nailbinding, or weaving using only
    a simple drop spindle.  This technique is portable and inexpensive
and predates the use of the spinning wheel in Europe.
