Noble friends,

Just cataloged for the Alderman Library at UVA: DAILY LIFE IN
ELIZABETHAN ENGLAND (2nd ed.) by Jeffrey L. Forgeng (ISBN 9780313365607;
UVA call # DA 320 .S56 2010). Technically this book is not new, but
still seems worth calling to the attention of Scadians. If you ever
wanted a handbook for building an English Elizabethan-era character,
this is exactly what you need. It covers just about every major aspect
of life during that time: society, dwellings, food and drink, the
family, games and past-times, etc. Need a pattern for Venetian breeches
or a bodice? They're here. How board games? Sure. Dances? Yes, and with
complete steps and musical notes. Money? Absolutely. The book is written
in a light style, very easy to read. It is illustrated with contemporary
engravings and some modern images. The bibliography is broken down by
topics. There is even a directory of web resources. My friends, this
book is not just one you should read, but one well worth buying. Oh, if
only we had something similar for late 15th century Scotland!

Kind regards,

Mungo Napier, Shire of Isenfir's unofficial librarian
(mka Garth Groff, UVA Libraries cataloger)
