His Grace Duke Deaton Claymore Sends Greetings.

Thank you. I am touched to tears.

Following the shock of my stroke in July, I am recovering my life and
health. I am utterly grateful for family, friends, and all who proffered
assistance. I am honored by my SCA-wide Family who stepped in to help in
time of need. I am blessed by my son and his wife who saved my life and
offered me a place in their home until I can manage again on my own. I am
thankful for all the help I have received.
I am humbled by the selflessness of so many. Those who asked my family to
accept donations in my behalf and those who set up the Facebook For Duke
Deaton auctions, donated items, or bid, did so out of simple generosity, but
many have relayed how my situation echoed moments of hardships of their own.
I am told the donations and auctions created a camaraderie of support among
those who participated, reminding many of the spirit of our Dream and the
role of Heroes in our lives. Truthfully though, it hasn't felt very heroic
to be trying to learn to walk, write and speak again, but rehabilitation is
being made possible by your generosity.

But I am also hurt and angered by the AtenCrown who exercised Its Right in
refusing my son, Count Morgan, entry into September's Crown Lists, finding
him unacceptable to compete because of me, and stating as Its Reason the
appearance of impropriety at my living in his house while having accepted
donations to aid my recovery. Though deeply grateful, neither Morgan nor I
solicited anything, and the Crown's Reasoning appears insulting. At a time
when a son's devotion has been most evident, Morgan should not be penalized
because of my lack of funds or as a political tactic. It shames me to be
used as a weapon against my son.

I offer my appreciation and thanks to all those made sure I could meet my
medical needs, maintain my emotional balance, and avoid losing my home. Such
acts of charity ennoble us all. They demonstrate true honor-in-action that
surpasses pretense of persona or created class distinctions. May we All
strive to become who we pretend we are.

Thank you to each and every one who sent me a message, thought a good
thought, led a gathering, or offered material help in my time of extremity.
You honor me with your concern, and I shall ever honor you for it.
