Noble friends,
Just cataloged for UVA Library: TURKS, A JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND YEARS,
600-1600, edited by David J. Roxburgh (ISBN 1903973562; our call # FINE
ARTS N7161.T87 2005). This massive volume is the catalog for an
exhibition of the same title, held in 2005 at the Royal Academy of Arts,
London. In nearly 500 lavishly illustrated pages, it tells the story and
explores the material culture of various Turkish super-tribes, the
Seljuks, Timurids and finally the Ottomans. Many of the illustrations
are paintings, but costumes, ceramics, fiber arts, period maps,
metalwork and weapons and all richly illustrated. The details and colors
in the photos are simply fantastic! The catalog portion is supported by
explanatory chapters that set the context of the artworks, and each item
is carefully described. As would be expected from a work such as this, a
complete bibliography and index are included. This book is a must for
anyone interested Turkish culture, or late Islamic culture in general
(since the Ottomans dominated so much of the Islamic world).
Kind regards,
Lord Mungo Napier, Shire of Isenfir's Unofficial Librarian
