[MR] Canvas Tents

It's getting into the time of year when people start to avidly watch the
mailing lists for canvas tents and pavilions to go up for sale. Canvas is
pricey, but once you've camped in a canvas tent you'll never want to go back
to a modern tent. They're more durable, more breathable, and frequently have
more room, for sometimes only a slight increase in storage space. (Okay,
okay, depending on how big your modern tent is, it could be a significant
difference in storage space.)

If you're on a budget but still would like to get into a canvas tent, you
can actually get a reasonably inexpensive "wall tent" from FC Sutler - link
below.

The "Large Wall Tent" is one that we purchased about 6 years ago - it's 10 x
12 and uses a 12 foot ridge pole with 2 - 7 foot uprights, and 10 perimeter
poles at 41 inches high. It was a relatively decent tent on a budget - make
sure you get sod cloth on the walls AND doors though.

I priced this out last night for someone with the following options:

Wall Tent *274.95*
10'6" wide, 12' long, 7' tall
Two Doors +$25.00
14 Stakes +$31.50
With Sod Cloth including the doors +$39.95
Without Fly
No Fly Stakes
No Stove Hole

It came to $371.40 before shipping. Once you go to the hardware store and
buy your 2 x2's for your uprights and your 12 foot 2 x 4 for your ridge
pole, you've spent about $50 on wood, which is still just under $500 for a
tent that will last you many years.

I do not work for or have any interest in FC Sutler - I'm more of a Panther
girl - but I seem to have this discussion every year with various folks, and
wanted to share with everyone. :)
